Coastal Day observed in Barisal calling for climate justice


The first Coastal Day was observed on Sunday in coastal districts including Barisal city calling for climate justice. 


Bangladesh Model Youth Parliament and YouthNet for Climate Justice jointly organized a human chain in front of Barisal Awshini Kumar Hall on this occasion for the first time aiming to protect country's coastal area and to develop the lifestyle of the people living there.

Sohanur Rahman, chief coordinator of YouthNet for Climate Justice, Akkas Hossain, district president of Citizens for Good Governance (SUJAN), Nazrul Islam Chunnu, Kajal Gosh, cultural activists, Sushanta Gosh, journalist, Khaleda Wahab, women leader, Ranjit Dutta development activist, Meher Afroj Mita, regional coordinator of The Hunger Project Bangladesh, Feroz Mostofa, Chairperson, Bangladesh Model Youth Parliament participated and addressed  the programme.

The day was observed at 34 places in 32 upazilas of 15 coastal districts with various programmes marking a cyclonic storm that ravaged the southern coasts of the then East Pakistan in 1970.

The disaster claimed hundreds of thousands of lives and countless cattle herds.

Responding to the call of Coastal Day Implementation Committee, about 100 organizations took part in different programmes.
